Alberta’s Industrial Heartland to Host Canada’s Largest Clean Hydrogen Facility by 2028

Linde, a global leader in industrial gases and engineering, has signed a long-term agreement to supply clean hydrogen for Dow’s Path2Zero project in Fort Saskatchewan. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant milestone in Canada’s clean energy sector, with Linde committing over $2 billion to construct and operate a state-of-the-art integrated hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH).

Slated for completion in 2028, this facility is set to become the largest clean hydrogen production site in Canada and one of the largest globally. The project underscores Linde’s most substantial single investment to date, positioning Alberta as a key player in the global hydrogen economy. The new facility will not only cater to Dow’s needs but will also supply clean hydrogen to a range of existing and future industrial customers aiming to decarbonize their operations.

Linde's facility is expected to capture over 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually for sequestration, a crucial step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The facility will leverage a combination of autothermal reforming (ATR) and Linde’s patented carbon capture technology, enabling efficient CO2 capture at a lower capital expenditure. This approach highlights Linde’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in clean energy production.

The project is anticipated to bring significant economic benefits to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, creating high-quality jobs and boosting the local economy. Mayor Gale Katchur of Fort Saskatchewan praised the project, stating, "Linde’s project will be a significant economic boost for the region and create good quality jobs, not just for Fort Saskatchewan but for the entire Edmonton Metro Region."

Linde’s $2 billion hydrogen project in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is a monumental step forward in Canada’s journey towards a sustainable energy future. The facility’s completion in 2028 will not only position the Edmonton Metropolitan Region as a global hub for clean hydrogen production but also play a pivotal role in the global energy transition.
