Akron-based company Babcock & Wilcox is making a significant investment of $60 million to construct a hydrogen production facility in the Massillon Energy and Technology Park. The site, located just 25 minutes from their headquarters, is a prime spot due to its access to natural gas, electricity, and ample space for future expansion. The groundbreaking is expected to take place this fall, with hydrogen production slated to begin in late 2025 or early 2026.
A Step Forward in Hydrogen Technology
The plant will feature Babcock & Wilcox's proprietary BrightLoop process, a cutting-edge hydrogen production method that promises higher efficiency and lower carbon emissions than traditional processes. This innovative technology utilizes natural gas to generate heat, which is then captured and used to produce hydrogen without the need for extensive cleaning. “We're able to make clean hydrogen that can be used for fuel cells and other industrial applications,” said Brandy Johnson, Chief Technology Officer at Babcock & Wilcox. The company will also capture and sequester the carbon dioxide produced in the process, making it an environmentally responsible solution.
Local Impact and Future Expansion
Initially, the Massillon hydrogen plant will produce three to five tons of hydrogen per day. The hydrogen generated will serve various industrial uses in Northeast Ohio, thanks to an offtake agreement with CGI International for local distribution.
This facility represents a significant step forward for the company, which has been testing its BrightLoop process at pilot sites in Ohio and Alabama. Now, with this commercial demonstration plant, Babcock & Wilcox is ready to scale up production with future projects planned in Wyoming and Louisiana.
Economic Development and Growth Potential
The new plant is seen as a major win for the Massillon Energy and Technology Park, which occupies the former Republic Steel site. With 25 acres available for future expansion, the park could attract additional clean energy and manufacturing businesses. “Their hydrogen plant could essentially create power for other manufacturers,” said Garret Kloots, Vice President of the park. Local officials, including Massillon Mayor Jamie Slutz, are optimistic about the project's potential to drive further economic development. “This investment shows that Massillon is ready to accommodate new technologies that can have a profound impact on our regional economy,” he said.
As the hydrogen economy continues to grow, the plant is positioned to become a key player in clean energy production for industries ranging from transportation to utilities, contributing to the region's economic and environmental progress.
A Bright Future for Hydrogen in Ohio
With this $60 million investment, Babcock & Wilcox is poised to become a leader in hydrogen production, fostering innovation and clean energy growth in Northeast Ohio. As demand for hydrogen rises in various sectors, the Massillon facility could serve as a model for future developments in clean energy technology. This development aligns with Ohio’s broader goals of boosting sustainable energy and reducing carbon emissions, positioning the state as a leader in the emerging hydrogen economy.
