India is rapidly emerging as a global leader in the fight against climate change, with its Green Hydrogen Mission taking center stage in the nation’s strategy to decarbonize heavy industries, transportation, and power generation. During a recent bilateral meeting on US-India Civil Nuclear Commerce at Prithvi Bhavan in New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, emphasized the mission’s significance, positioning it as a cornerstone of India’s efforts to advance global climate goals.


India’s Green Hydrogen Mission is bolstered by robust policy frameworks and strategic international partnerships. Dr. Singh highlighted that these collaborations are essential for driving the mission’s objectives and ensuring India’s leadership in the transition to a sustainable energy future. In addition to the Green Hydrogen Mission, Dr. Singh announced India’s pursuit of international partnerships to support the use of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). SMRs are poised to be a pivotal technology in India’s clean energy transition, offering scalable and sustainable solutions that contribute to the nation’s energy self-reliance and climate commitments.


The meeting also featured discussions on India’s advancements in emerging technologies. Dr. Ravi Chandran, Secretary of Earth Sciences, highlighted the progress in ocean energy and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, which are critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, focused on India’s progress in biomass-to-energy conversion and the deployment of biofuels.


India’s Green Hydrogen Mission, supported by international collaborations and strong policy frameworks, is set to play a crucial role in the global fight against climate change. As India continues to innovate and lead in clean energy technologies, it is well-positioned to make significant contributions to global climate goals, reinforcing its role as a key player in the transition to a sustainable energy future.
