Meet Zemu: America’s First Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Train

Alstom Cordia recently deployed a hydrogen train in Bremerhaven, in America, Zemu is poised to become the first hydrogen train.

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation, San Bernardino has unveiled the nation’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train, marking a significant milestone in California's ambitious journey to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. The innovative train, named Zemu (Zero-Emission Multiple Unit), represents a leap forward in eco-friendly transit solutions.

The $20 million Zemu train utilizes a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell and battery system, allowing it to transport up to 108 seated passengers along a 9-mile route known as the Arrow Corridor. This initiative is particularly crucial for San Bernardino, a city grappling with poor air quality due to its dense network of freeways, rail yards, and industrial facilities. The introduction of Zemu is expected to significantly improve local air quality while providing a quieter travel experience for commuters. The hydrogen fuel cells work by combining hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, with water vapor as the only byproduct, making Zemu a truly zero-emission vehicle.

Zemu is set to become the first passenger train in North America to meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements when it begins operations in 2025. This pioneering project has been years in the making, with SBCTA officials collaborating with Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler Inc. to develop a technology that addresses the region's air quality challenges while alleviating congestion on local roads.

California is not stopping at just one hydrogen train. The state’s Department of Transportation, Caltrans, has commissioned Stadler to build longer versions of the hydrogen-powered trains to operate between Merced and Sacramento in the Central Valley. Caltrans has already placed an order for 10 units, with the option to purchase 19 more under an $80 million contract.

The Zemu train serves as a proof of concept for other states looking to green their transportation networks. As California leads the charge in hydrogen technology, the hope is that this innovative approach will inspire similar initiatives nationwide.  As California pioneers the future of sustainable transportation, the Zemu train stands as a beacon of hope for cleaner air and a healthier planet. With its innovative technology and commitment to zero emissions, Zemu is not just a train; it’s a step towards a greener future.
