Unlocking Hydrogen Innovation: Deakin University Launches Groundbreaking Technology Hub

On October 1, 2024, Deakin University proudly inaugurated the Hycel Technology Hub at its Warrnambool campus, marking a significant milestone as Australia’s first dedicated hydrogen research and demonstration centre. This state-of-the-art facility spans 2,200 square meters and is designed to advance hydrogen research, testing, training, and demonstration, positioning Australia at the forefront of the global clean energy transition.

The Hycel Technology Hub is strategically situated along a key interstate transport corridor, connecting vital industries, communities, and resources. This prime location within a Victorian Renewable Energy Zone enhances its potential to foster collaboration and innovation in hydrogen technologies. Hycel’s mission is to facilitate the industry-led advancement of safe and commercially viable hydrogen adoption within Australia’s clean energy mix.

The Hub features purpose-built spaces that encourage industry co-location, focusing on fuel cell and hydrogen technologies.  With a total program value exceeding $20 million, the Hycel Technology Hub represents a significant investment in hydrogen technology and regional Victoria. This funding includes contributions of $9 million from both the Commonwealth and Victorian state governments, alongside Deakin’s own investment.

The Hycel Technology Hub is equipped with advanced facilities, including plumbed-in low- and high-pressure hydrogen systems, specialized laboratories, and the G400 fuel cell stack testing station—the only one of its kind in Australia. Fuel cells are crucial for transforming hydrogen gas into electricity, powering various applications from land vehicles to aviation and marine uses.  The Hub also features a new product engineering lab and three dedicated lab bays, complemented by offices and a multifunctional community space for events, training, and industry collaboration.

The opening of the Hycel Technology Hub at Deakin Warrnambool is a pivotal step towards establishing Australia as a leader in hydrogen technology and clean energy solutions. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Hub aims to address critical challenges in hydrogen adoption, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for the region and beyond.
